Do you have a 3-week, 3-month, 3-year or 3-decade plan? If your answer is “No”, don’t freak-out! I know everyone tells us to “have a plan”. Or they say if we don’t have a plan in life, we will not succeed in life. While there is truth in this shared rhetoric across success teachings, sometimes “our plan” is only a finite piece of a much bigger and exciting plan. Or sometimes, our plan is really just a holding pattern to develop certain skills and life experiences needed to fulfill our greater life purpose. For those of us searching for a plan or life purpose, this might be good news. However, “plan evangelists” are probably freaking out. I can relate because I am a recovering “plan evangelist”, myself.

Speaking from both sides of the “plan fence”, I want you to relax and trust you will kick tail in life. How can I say it so confidently? Because we were ALL created to mean something, do something and become something amazing. No one was created to fail. Sure we have failed experiences, moments and efforts, but our life is not a failure. No one’s life is a failure unless we buy into the lie we have failed. Now that we have that sorted out, let’s get back to this whole life plan thing.

If you’re searching for a plan…

Relax and trust the season of life you are in. There are times of hyper-focused effort leading you to the next stage of your life plan. During hyper-focus seasons, you are often singularly focused, eliminating any distractions so you can reach your appointed goals. Then there are times of rest and restoration allowing you to explore new areas, check out open doors and let God direct your path to the next stepping stone on the grand journey called “Your Life”.  If you’re a go-getter this could be an incredibly uncomfortable stage for you. However, this is the season you grow the most because you are so outside of your comfort zone. The best way to survive this stage is to embrace it. Find gratitude and joy in every day. Try new things. Laugh and engage in fun activities. Have conversations with God. Ask Him to share glimpses of the amazing things He has in store for you. The hardest part about this season is that you don’t feel like you’re succeeding, but you are. You are being prepared for the next phase of your amazing life.

If you’re working your plan…

Stay focused for this appointed season, knowing a break will come. If your plan feels stale or you’re having a hard time getting motivated, take time to evaluate your plan. Ask yourself if the plan you are working is really your plan. It might be, but it also might be a plan someone else suggested for you, or a plan you are doing to please someone you care about. Maybe it’s a default plan because your original plan didn’t work. Don’t quit your plan, just evaluate it to see if you need to make any course corrections.

Plan or no plan, let’s not have anxiety about our future. God knows every step and decision we have ever made and will make so He will help keep us on track. As a matter of fact, He never wastes our time. And He can use any experience we have to help us reach our plan. All we have to do is trust Him. He will always lead us to victory even if it at times it gets a bit uncomfortable or we get anxious about the unknown. He always has our best interest in mind and only wants the absolute best for us!
