So I was watching an interview with Taylor Swift about the message behind her new song Shake It Off and it inspired me to write this post. Taylor said something powerful that really moved me:
“You can get everything you want in life without ever feeling like you fit in! I don’t think it’s the most important thing in life, to fit in. I think it’s the most important thing in life to dance to the beat of your own drum and to look like you’re having more fun than the people who look cool like they fit in.”
Her statement inspired me because encouraging you to be uniquely you is at the heart of everything we do at You Can’t Fail. As we celebrate our one year anniversary here at You Can’t Fail, Taylor’s message reminds us of our passionate mission and call. We wholeheartedly believe and know that each and every person is created to “get everything they want in life without feeling like they have to fit it”. As a matter of fact, the more you try to fit in, the more you move away from getting what you want in life. In other words, all that has been placed in your heart to achieve and create in your lifetime can only be fully realized by you embracing who you are! If you are trying be like someone else, then you are living someone else’s journey. And guess what? You can’t accomplish someone else’s journey. You can only realize your own journey. I hope this is freeing for some of you. So many of us, including myself, have lived in the shadow of other people’s greatness. We’ve been trying to shape our lives, bodies and thoughts into their mold, but we don’t fit because it’s THEIR mold, not ours. What’s so awesome is our uniquely designed mold fits us perfectly. After all, you can’t kick tail in life in you’re trying to kick tail in someone else’s life. Right, right?
Sure, we might have to grow into our mold a little bit, but that’s half of the fun.
One of the biggest enemies of us living our own life is the opinion of others. Just ask Taylor. The media loves to speculate about her life and better yet, get her to conform to the mainstream, but she refuses to give in. As a matter of fact, her main message in Shake it Off is to shake off all of the negative things people say about you. Don’t let it rock you or get you off of your mission. You are never going to please everyone. What’s most important is that you stay true to your mission. You will be able to positively impact more people sticking to your guns instead of conforming to the mainstream. The more you conform, the more you lose you the power of your unique mission. Are you picking up what I am laying down? Taylor does such a great job of depicting the mess of conformity in her Shake it Off video. When she’s trying to be like the people around her she’s not her best and she brings down the people around her. Then at the end she finds herself and that’s where she shines the most. Check it out!
Being you never has to come at the cost of another person.
As I round up this rant on how awesome you are and why it’s so important for you to be you, I want to make one point clear! Being you never has to come at the expense of another person. Being you is not about hurting others in the process. While some people may not agree with you, being you is always with grace and love towards others. As long you keep this thought in your heart, then your fabulous you will be that much more fabulous and inspire more people instead of harm them!
